Creating a musical is an epic project — and one best entered with eyes wide open. So, since first deciding to develop this project, I’ve been diving deeply into the literature of musical theater to try to give myself the best self-directed MFA I can, reading and watching: shows, craft books, librettos, biographies, and more. I was a music composition and English literature double major in college, which provided a strong foundation, and I taught and tutored English for 15+ years, which expanded my reading, but I studied and taught those hundreds of works of literature in a different way than I look at them now as a writer and composer. This is a running list of the texts I’ve been reading and re-reading since embarking on this work. I’m always looking to learn more, so I share this in the spirit of making learning visible. Recommendations invited!— Peter
